shiftN’s Philippe Vandenbroeck was invited as a keynote speaker to an international conference on Wicked Problems, held in Lisbon, July 11-12, 2014.

The conference was organised by two key players in Portugal’s civil society: the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation and IPAV.

In his keynote Philippe underlined that framing an issue as a ‘wicked problem’ is an invitation to mobilise a different problem solving repertoire. It is a call to action rather than diagnosis of hopelessness.

The conference was followed by a lively workshop in which participants were invited to explore a wicked societal challenge using a soft systems approach.
